President’s Tailgates

The President’s Tailgates were events hosted by Eric Barron, president of Penn State, before each home football game. For multiple tailgates, the senior musical theatre class was invited to perform a cabaret style performance for the guests, which ranged from 100-250 people depending on the week. The sound department accompanied them and installed a sound system to amplify both the actors and the band, and had an hour of rehearsal and spacing onstage before the beginning of the event. For the past two years I have been the sound engineer for these events, helping to run the load-in and rehearsal the day of, as well as making input decisions and adjusting the console file.

These events could be indoors or outdoors, and the system and call times were adjusted according to the weather and start time of the football game. All of these events were done on a DiGiCo SD9.

Below is an excerpt of a Sunday in the Park with George parody, which was the first song of the outdoor tailgate on October 19th, 2019.

This parody was performed at a President's Tailgate by the Penn State BFA Musical Theatre Class of 2020 with support from the BFA Sound Design program.
