Beijing INternational Biennale

The Beijing International Biennale, also known as the International Stage Design Students’ Work Exchange (ISDSWE), is a conference co-sponsored by Organisation Internationale des Scénographes, Techniciens et Architectes de Théâtre (OISTAT) and the Chinese Academy of Drama. This semi-annual event is designed to bring together designers from around the globe to experience others’ work and exchange ideas.

I was invited to attend the Beijing International Biennale in the fall of 2018 in Beijing, China. While there, I participated in a 3-day long workshop where we created and produced a devised piece of theatre with an international group of artists. My group’s task was to embody emotions through visual and aural design. I was largely responsible for the sound design of the piece, as the only group member who had done a large amount of sound design in the past.

Below is an image of our group members who performed the piece at the end of the third day, as well as a video with the audio overlaid from the source files.

The prompt for our group was to embody emotions and emotional storytelling with visual and aural elements. The piece was conceived, developed, and built over the next two and a half days and performed on the third day. This is a video recording of our performance with some audio added in post to improve the audio quality.

This gallery shows the Qlab programming for the piece. Numbered cues were manually fired, with all others being timed to start within a group cue. The music was an original composition and ran utilizing loops and devamp cues.
